Bangkok 03 05 Wat Traimit Golden Buddha [21 of 27]
Dating from the 13th century in Ayutthaya, Wat Traimit contains the largest solid gold Buddha in the world, weighing in at 4800kg and measuring 4.8m by 3.8m. To camouflage it from Burmese invaders, it was given a thick plaster coating and was consequently "lost." The encased statue was moved to Bangkok and installed as the principal Buddha image in the main building of the Choti-naram Temple during the reign of Rama III. The temple was deserted about 1931, and plaster-covered Buddha was moved to a temporary shelter in Wat Traimit. The true nature of the Golden Buddha wasn't discovered until 1955 when, as it was being moved to its permanent building, the rain soaked figure was dropped and the stucco cracked to reveal the figure inside.
